Buying a Used Truck in Springfield, MO: What to Check
A used pickup can be one of the most useful vehicles you'll ever own, whether it hauls mulch on the weekend, tows a boat to the lake or just gets you to work on gravel roads. Trucks also tend to work harder than cars, so it pays to know what to look at before you buy. Use this checklist on any used truck you're considering.
Start with how you'll use it
Before you look at a single truck, write down what you need it to do:
- What you'll tow, and roughly how much it weighs with gear loaded.
- What you'll haul in the bed, and how often.
- How many people ride with you — that decides regular, extended or crew cab.
- Where you'll drive — pavement, gravel, mud or snow.
That list tells you which cab, bed length, engine and drivetrain to look for, and it keeps you from paying for capability you won't use (or buying too little). If you're still deciding between a truck and an SUV, our guide to choosing a truck or SUV for the Ozarks can help.
Check the ratings, not just the badge
Two trucks with the same name can have very different capabilities depending on engine, axle ratio, cab, bed and equipment.
- Towing capacity is listed in the owner's manual or by the manufacturer for that exact configuration. Confirm it for the specific truck rather than relying on a general number for the model.
- Payload — the weight of people and cargo the truck can carry — is shown on the tire and loading information label, usually on the driver's door jamb.
- Hitch and wiring. If you tow, check for a factory tow package or a receiver hitch, trailer wiring, and whether the truck has a trailer brake controller if your trailer needs one.
Look underneath and at the frame
- Rust. Surface rust on some parts is normal for older trucks, but look closely at the frame rails, cab corners, rocker panels, bed floor and brake lines. Flaking or holes are a reason to ask questions or walk away.
- Leaks. Look for fresh drips under the engine, transmission, transfer case and differentials.
- Signs of hard use. A worn hitch receiver, bent or scraped skid plates, or a rear that sits low can point to heavy towing or off-road use. That isn't automatically bad, but it should match the truck's maintenance history.
Inspect the bed and tailgate
Scratches are normal on a work truck. Look past them for dents in the bed floor, cracks, rust under a bed liner, and a tailgate that opens, latches and closes properly. If there's a tonneau cover or a cap, make sure it locks and seals.
Test 4WD and the drivetrain
On a 4WD truck, ask to see 4WD engage. The indicator light should come on and go off as expected, and you shouldn't hear grinding or clunking. On the test drive, watch for smooth shifts, steady steering at highway speed, and brakes that stop straight. Our used car test drive checklist walks through the rest.
Tires tell a story
Check tread depth and whether all four tires match. Uneven wear can point to alignment or suspension issues, which are common on trucks that carry heavy loads. Larger aftermarket tires or a lift kit change how a truck drives; ask what was modified.
Do your homework on the paperwork
- Read the vehicle history report. Look for accidents, title brands and how the truck was used. Our guide to reading a vehicle history report explains what shows up. Look for the CARFAX link on our vehicle pages.
- Check for open recalls by entering the VIN on NHTSA's recall lookup.
- Ask for service records, especially oil changes and any transmission, transfer case or differential service.
- Consider an independent inspection for peace of mind. Ask us about arranging it before you commit.
Plan the whole cost
Set your budget around the total cost, not only the price. In Missouri you pay sales tax when you title the vehicle, and the Department of Revenue gives you 30 days from the purchase date to title it — our guide to price, tax, title and fees explains each part. Get an insurance quote on the specific truck too, since rates can vary by model.
