Used Car Test Drive Checklist

By Allegiant Automotive · · 3 min read

A test drive is your best chance to find out how a used vehicle really feels. Going in with a plan helps you notice the things that matter. Bring your driver's license and use this checklist.

Before you drive

  • Walk around the outside. Look for mismatched paint, uneven panel gaps, rust and tire wear. Uneven tire wear can point to alignment issues.
  • Check the tires. Look at tread depth and whether all four match.
  • Look inside. Check seats, headliner and carpets. Note any smells.
  • Start it cold if you can. Listen for unusual noises and watch for warning lights that stay on.
  • Test the electronics. Windows, locks, mirrors, lights, wipers, climate control, the infotainment screen, Bluetooth, backup camera and any Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

On the road

  1. Drive the roads you actually use. Include some stop-and-go, a highway on-ramp and, if you can, a hill.
  2. Accelerate smoothly and firmly. Shifts should be smooth without slipping or hard clunks.
  3. Brake gently and firmly. The vehicle should stop straight without pulling, grinding or pulsing.
  4. Check the steering. It should feel steady at highway speed without wandering.
  5. Listen. Turn the radio off and listen for rattles, whines or knocks.
  6. Try parking. Check visibility and turning radius, and use the backup camera or sensors.

After the drive

  • Look under the vehicle for fresh drips.
  • Check that no new warning lights came on.
  • Ask for the vehicle history report if available — see how to read one.
  • Ask about service records and what reconditioning was done.
  • Compare it with the other vehicles on your list — our Compare tool shows up to three side by side.

Match it to the listing

Before you leave, compare the vehicle to its online listing. Confirm the trim, mileage and key features you care about — heated seats, sunroof, AWD or 4WD, third-row seating, backup camera. Features vary by trim, so checking in person avoids surprises. If something doesn't match, ask; listings come from the dealership's records and should always be verified with a sales representative.

Make it fit your life

  • Bring what you'll carry. A car seat, stroller, golf clubs or work gear — make sure it fits.
  • Bring a second opinion. Another set of eyes and ears catches things you might miss.
  • Sit in every seat you'll use. Check rear-seat legroom and headroom for your passengers.
  • Test your phone. Pair it over Bluetooth, and try Apple CarPlay or Android Auto if the vehicle has them.
  • Take your time. A rushed drive misses things. Plan for 20 to 30 minutes on the road.

Common questions

How long should a test drive take?

Plan for 20 to 30 minutes on the road, plus time to look the vehicle over before and after.

Can I test drive more than one vehicle?

Yes — comparing back to back is one of the best ways to decide. Tell us which vehicles you'd like to see and we'll have them ready.

Should I get an independent inspection?

For peace of mind, many buyers do. Ask us about arranging it before you commit.

What should I bring?

Your driver's license, proof of insurance if you have it, and anything you want to test for fit, like a car seat.
